If we could learn to look instead of gawking,
We’d see the horror in the heart of farce,
If only we could act instead of talking,
We wouldn’t always end up on our arse.

Brecht’s satirical allegory parallels the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany during the 1930s. The play is set in Chicago during the Prohibition era and follows the rise of a fictional gangster, Arturo Ui, who uses violence, intimidation, and manipulation to take over the cauliflower racket.

The play serves as a powerful political allegory warning against the dangers of unchecked power and the manipulation of democratic systems.
