  • Please prepare a 2-minute contemporary monologue from an American play.

  • Please bring your resume and headshot.

Roles Available

Kayleen (female)
Age range: 20-30 to play 8-38

Kayleen and Doug are deeply attracted to one another in all ways — emotionally/mentally/physically/socio-culturally/spiritually — yet she is reluctant to admit or acknowledge it. She is hardscrabble and strong willed with a capacity for vulnerability alongside a biting wit and headstrong defiance.

Looking for a versatile actor with emotional depth and a willingness to explore the complexities of her character in this actor-driven two hander.

Doug (male)
Age range: 20-30 to play 8-38

A consummate risk-taker with a disturbing lust for self-induced injuries, Doug craves Kayleen's attention and mutual attraction — he essentially is driven by a need for her to be his soulmate. More impulsive than thoughtful, he is constantly getting into accidents — or inviting them — and possesses appealing charm and indefatigable resilience.

Looking for a strong actor who can hold the stage with his counterpart while shifting in and out of long periods of time between scenes.

Synopsis

Gruesome Playground Injuries is a fast-paced, intense, and darkly comic play by Rajiv Joseph. It tells the story of Kayleen and Doug, two friends whose lives are intertwined through a series of injuries that bring them together. Spanning ages 8 to 38, the play follows their relationship as they navigate life's challenges, sometimes leaning on each other too much, occasionally causing harm, and often struggling to ask for help. Its non-chronological structure allows the audience to piece together their attraction while exploring themes of lost love, pain, regret, and how injuries can map a lifetime. Joseph highlights the complexity and messiness of life, reminding us that it becomes a bit easier with someone by our side.
